How to Create a Google Business Profile Step-by-Step (2026 Setup Guide)
A Google Business Profile takes 30 minutes to create if you do it right, and weeks to fix if you do it wrong. The same form that gets you into the Local Pack can get you suspended if you stuff keywords into your name, fake an address you don't serve, or pick the wrong primary category. This guide walks you through the exact setup flow Google shows in 2026, with the pitfalls BrightLocal's setup guide and SEO.com's 11 steps miss — updated for video-first verification and Happy Rank's validation. Pair it with what is GBP and is GBP free before you start.
Before you start: what you need ready
- Google account — use a business-owned Gmail. At accounts.google.com turn business personalization on so Business Profile setup prefills correctly.
- Official business name exactly as on signage/license — no keywords like "Best Plumber" appended. Violates GBP name guidelines and triggers suspension.
- Primary category — the single most specific category matching your money service (e.g., "Emergency Plumber" not "Contractor"). Choose secondary categories later.
- Address or service areas — decide: Storefront (address visible), Service-area business SAB (address hidden, areas listed), or Hybrid (both). See GBP vs Maps.
- Permanent phone + website URL — this becomes your canonical NAP. Changing it later requires citation cleanup per NAP consistency.
Step 1: Create or find your business at business.google.com
Go to business.google.com/create while signed into your business Google account and click "Add your business to Google." Type your exact business name.
- Name appears as you type? Your profile exists (possibly auto-generated). Select it and you will see "Own this business?" or "Manage now" / "Request access" — skip to verification in how to verify. Do not create a duplicate.
- Name does not appear? Click "Create a business with this name" and continue. Google will ask for your business category — start typing and pick the closest from the dropdown. You can edit and add 2-4 secondary categories after go-live per 12-point checklist.

Step 2: Choose how you serve customers — address vs service area
Google asks: "Do customers visit your location?" Answer honestly — Google checks this during video verification.
| Your answer | What you enter | Where address shows | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yes — customers come to me | Full accurate address + confirm pin on map | Visible on Profile, Maps, Knowledge Panel | Cafe, dentist, retail store |
| No — I go to customers | Hide address + list up to 20 service areas (cities, postal codes, regions) | Hidden; only service areas shown | Plumber, locksmith, cleaning service — see plumber SEO |
| Both — store + mobile service | Address visible + service areas defined | Both shown | Pizza with delivery, appliance showroom with install team |
Step 3: Add contact details
Enter phone and website. Phone is optional only if you have another contact path, but add it — "Call" is the highest-converting action from GBP. If you are an agency setting up for a client, enter the client's number, not yours, and warn them Google may call for verification. Adding SMS/WhatsApp messaging is optional — only enable if you reply within minutes, unanswered chats hurt reputation.
Step 4: Verify — now or later (but now is faster)
You can skip verification, but your profile stays invisible and largely uneditable until verified. We recommend verifying immediately. Common methods in 2026:
| Method | How it works | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Video (default) | 60-90 sec recording at location: exterior signage, interior, tools/inventory, proof you manage the business — no blur, no cuts | Most new listings |
| Phone | Automated call/text with PIN to business number | Some categories/established numbers |
| PIN to GBP account email | Some accounts | |
| Postcard | Google mails PIN to address, enter in dashboard | Fallback; 5-14 days |
| Instant | Auto-verified via Search Console domain match | Rare, if domain already verified |
Full checklist, what to film, and what to do if someone else owns the profile (Request Access 3-7 day window + appeal docs) is in our dedicated how to verify guide.
Step 5: Add photos — storefront + products/services
Google asks for a storefront photo (for storefront/hybrid) to help customers recognize you, then product/service photos. Add at least 3 now: exterior with signage, interior, and team or flagship product/service. Follow Google's photo guidelines (well-lit, no stock). Customer photos will appear later in your listing and you cannot reorder them — seeding your own photos early controls the gallery's first impression. Fresh photos correlate with more direction requests and clicks, see psychology of local search.
Step 6: Skip Ads, go live, then finish in 30 minutes
Google will offer Google Ads — skip it (you can add later). Once verification is accepted, your listing starts appearing in Search/Maps. Immediately search for your business name, click "Edit profile" on Search, and complete the remaining fields:
- Business description — 750 characters max, no URLs. Write who you serve, what you do, what makes you different, city mentioned naturally once. See GBP description help.
- Hours — main hours + add Special Hours for holidays/closures now. Wrong hours are #1 driver of "closed" 1-star reviews per negative reviews.
- Social profiles — add Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube etc. under Social Profile links.
- Attributes — select applicable: women-owned, LGBTQ+ friendly, accessibility, payment types. Options depend on category — check back quarterly for new ones.
- Opening date and appointment/booking link if applicable.
Step 7: Post-launch validation checklist (5 minutes)
- Search your name: does Knowledge Panel show on desktop right side with correct hours/phone/photos?
- Search "service near me" from phone near your location: do you appear in Local Pack? If not, run a geo-grid heatmap — you may be green at your pin but red 800m away.
- Check NAP on website footer and top 5 citations (Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook) matches GBP exactly per NAP consistency.
- Send yourself a test review link and confirm review reply notifications are on.
Common suspension traps to avoid
| Trap | Why Google suspends | Do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword-stuffed name: "Joe's Plumbing - Emergency 24/7 HVAC" | Name does not match signage/license | Exact legal name; put keywords in services/description |
| Virtual office/coworking address as storefront | No real customer-facing location | Use SAB hidden address + service areas |
| Category spam: 10 secondary categories | Irrelevant categories dilute relevance | 1 primary + 2-4 accurate secondary only |
| Duplicate profile for same location | Google merges or suspends both | Claim existing via Request Access per verify guide |
“Setup is not the win. A correctly set up profile that you then optimize weekly beats a perfectly filled form you never touch again.”
